RUBICON TRAIL: WHEN TO RUN THE TRAIL?

Friends of the Rubicon (FOTR) have helped save the Rubicon from a gate that was rumored early in 2001. By working with Placer County, we have prevented having gated closures across the trail on the Tahoe side.

We are now working with El Dorado County and the USFS with further trail improvements. 4x4 Top Sites

Can I run the Rubicon? What are the trail restrictions? Is there a GATE?

We (FOTR) sit at the table of the Rubicon Oversight Committee in the development of the Rubicon Trail Master Plan that will guide the entire future of the trail. El Dorado County is the lead agency for this Master Plan because the Rubicon is a county road. FOTR is partnered with the County.

THERE IS NO GATE. THE TRAIL IS OPEN!! HOWEVER>>>>

History in the making. The Rubicon was closed only temporarily -- with FOTR in agreement. This will help us keep our crown jewel open forever!

Please help us by complying with any temporary restrictions.

This is what we posted on the west end of the Staging Area, Tahoe side, and at the entrance to the subdivision when you leave Hwy 89. This historic closure asked for your voluntary cooperation (as opposed to a gate with locks). It worked! WE prevented the gate and fixed the erosion problems.

June, July, August and September are the best times to run the trail (except for those two weeks mentioned above). There's a big chance of snow any other time; and we should not be on the trail during wet winter/spring months when damage is done to the trail. It's just best to wait until Summer and early Fall.

In my thinking, in the winter time, you should be off in Colorado enjoying an Aspen or Vail ski rentals vacation! Del
