Dunsmuir/Mt. Shasta Four-Wheeling Adventure

The Dunsmuir/Mt. Shasta area of northern California is a wonderful place for SUV (and even some more difficult four-wheeling) adventures.  One hour north of Redding, CA, Dunsmuir is a small, quaint old logging town, right on Interstate 5, that caters to resorts, visitors, recreation and just plain relaxing. Most notably, this area has some of the finest trout fishing streams in California. The upper Sacramento River flows through town and has many great fishing spots. Mt. Shasta itself can be seen from hundreds of view points throughout the area. It's very spectacular scenery. See pics.

Old logging roads abound near Dunsmuir that provide views of Mt. Shasta (in the background here).

Castle Craig as seen along the frontage road past the State Park, just outside Dunsmuir, CA.

Castle Lake, an easy 2WD trip, mostly on pavement.

Castle Craig is an usual granite outcropping that can be seen for many miles around the I-5, Dunsmuir area.

Right outside Dunsmuir you can hike to these falls (not flowing much in earlySeptember).
